Message from Councilwoman Elizabeth Stamler | January 16, 2026
Each year, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day gives us the opportunity to remember his words and honor his legacy through action. That is why I am pleased to invite the entire Scotch Plains community to take part in the 17th-annual Scotch Plains/Fanwood Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 19.
For nearly two decades, residents of Scotch Plains and Fanwood have joined together on this day to remember, learn and give their time in service to others. Created by volunteers for volunteers, this annual event has grown into a powerful celebration of the caring and interconnected community we continue to build together.
While much has changed in the world over the years, our commitment to Dr. King’s vision of a society that is more just, more whole and more compassionate has never wavered.
The day will begin at 10 a.m. with an Opening Program at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, 1340 Martine Ave. This program will feature musical performances, inspiring reflections and the presentation of the SP-F MLK Day of Service Award, recognizing individuals who embody the spirit of service and leadership that Dr. King championed.
Following the opening program, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., community members of all ages are invited to participate in a wide variety of volunteer opportunities. Both in-person and virtual service projects will be available, making it possible for everyone, including children, families and seniors alike, to contribute in a way that is meaningful to them.
The Senior Brunch and Bingo event at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 1571 Martine Ave., for example, gives residents the chance to prepare and serve brunch, soup, salad and sandwiches to members of our senior community while helping them play bingo.
Visit here for a full list of volunteer opportunities.
These projects reflect the belief that service is not limited by age or ability, and that every act of kindness strengthens our community.
By actively engaging in charitable services such as these, residents can make a tangible difference in the lives of others and contribute to the betterment of our community. And just as importantly, days like this serve as an inspiration to the young men and women who will one day grow to be civic leaders of their own.
This important day is made possible thanks to the dedication of our community organizers, including the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA, SocialJusticeMatters.org, the JCC of Central New Jersey and the Scotch Plains/Fanwood Ministerium.
I encourage you to visit the event’s Facebook page for full event details, volunteer opportunities and registration information. I hope you will join us in honoring Dr. King’s legacy by serving others and strengthening the bonds that make our community so special.
