SJM To Screen "A Story of Bones," Documentary on Ex-Slaves’ Mass Burial

Social Justice Matters Inc. (SJM) on July 27 will screen the award-winning documentary, ‘A Story of Bones,’ about the remains of thousands of formerly enslaved Africans on an Atlantic Ocean island.

The film, which is free and open to the public, will be shown at 2 pm at Shady Rest Golf Club, 820 Jerusalem Road, Scotch Plains.

The 1-hour, 35-minute film chronicles Annina Van Neel's work to reclaim and honor 325 skeletons uncovered in an unmarked mass burial ground on Saint Helena Island during a construction project.

Van Neel worked with Peggy King Jorde, a cultural projects consultant and expert on African burial grounds, in her struggle to respectfully memorialize the remains. Jorde will join the audience at Shady Rest for a discussion after the screening.

Ice cream will be available for purchase onsite from The Urban Cone just prior to the film’s screening.
