What to Do if You See a Rabid Raccoon

There have been reports of rabid raccoons in the region.

If you encounter a raccoon that you suspect has rabies, do not approach it. Immediately call 911.  Professionals are trained to handle these situations safely. Do not attempt to handle the raccoon yourself. 

• Do not approach: Rabid raccoons can be aggressive and pose a serious danger. 
• Call 911: Report the raccoon's location and behavior to the Scotch Plains police.
• Do not attempt to handle: Leave the situation to the professionals. 
• If bitten or scratched: Seek immediate medical attention and report the incident to the police.
