9/11 Memorial Ceremony
The Township of Scotch Plans is urging residents and guests to attend the annual remembrance of 9/11 at the annual ceremony, to be held Thursday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Alan M. Augustine Village Green on Park Avenue.
The event, coordinated through the Scotch Plains Police Department, will include the playing of “Taps” from a bugler, as the family members of three local victims and emergency responders place roses on top of the township’s 9/11 memorial.
“Twenty-four years ago, our nation was shaken by the tragic events of September 11, 2001,” said Mayor Josh Losardo. “And while the years continue to pass, the memory of that day, and the lives we lost, remain with us always. By saying their names, year after year, we remind the world that they were more than victims of terrorism.”
Scotch Plain carries in its heart three of its own:
- Matthew Horning, 26
- James Walsh, 37
- Mark David “Mickey” Rothenberg, 52
As part of the hour-long ceremony, the invocation will be provided by the Rev. Chaz Hutchison of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church. Prayers will also be given by Rabbi Howard Tilman of Congregation Beth Israel and Father Andy Prachar of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church.
Family members of the victims are also invited to speak.
In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the council chambers of the Scotch Plains municipal building, 430 Park Ave.
